During the BRICS Energy Ministers Conference in Moscow, Egypt outlined its goal to have renewable energy make up over 42% of its energy mix by 2040.
Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mahmoud Esmat, announced plans to capture 5-8% of the global green hydrogen market by that year, highlighting Egypt’s commitment to sustainable energy through its abundant solar and wind resources.
He introduced a national hydrogen strategy, including a National Hydrogen Council and new legislation to encourage investments in green hydrogen.
South Africa’s Minister of Electricity and Energy, Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, emphasized the need for BRICS Plus countries to work together on energy challenges, ensuring that energy transitions support sovereignty, economic growth, and universal access while addressing environmental issues.
He also noted the recent expansion of the BRICS bloc as a sign of its growing influence in the global energy sector.
