Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken discussed ceasefire efforts and humanitarian issues in Gaza, Lebanon, and Sudan in a recent phone call. The talks focused on achieving an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and addressing worsening humanitarian conditions, with Abdelatty condemning Israel’s actions that obstruct aid and UNRWA operations. He stressed the need for empowering the Palestinian Authority and unifying the West Bank and Gaza as a single Palestinian entity to advance a two-state solution.
In Lebanon, the officials discussed political and security concerns, including the need to de-escalate tensions and fully implement UN Resolution 1701. Abdelatty criticized Israeli incursions into Lebanese territory and UNIFIL targeting, emphasizing Lebanon’s sovereignty. He also highlighted Egypt’s role in supporting Lebanon’s efforts to resolve its presidential vacancy, urging a local solution free from foreign influence.
Turning to Sudan, Abdelatty and Blinken addressed the ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which has left thousands dead and displaced millions. They discussed the importance of maintaining Sudan’s state institutions, protecting territorial integrity, and increasing humanitarian aid to alleviate severe shortages impacting millions.
