Egypt and the United States have agreed to continue consultations and coordination on a comprehensive reconstruction plan for Gaza, laying the groundwork for efforts to rebuild the war-torn enclave.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty met with White House Middle East Envoy Steve Witkoff and Eric Trager, Senior Director for the Middle East and North Africa at the US National Security Council, on the sidelines of an Arab ministerial meeting in Qatar. The talks focused on implementing the Arab-led reconstruction initiative, which was approved at the Arab Summit in Cairo on March 4, 2025.
Five-Year Reconstruction Plan
According to Egypt’s Foreign Ministry, both sides committed to ongoing discussions to ensure the plan serves as the foundation for rebuilding Gaza and restoring regional stability. The US envoy praised Egypt’s role in promoting peace and security in the region.
The reconstruction initiative, backed by the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, aims to rebuild Gaza without displacing its Palestinian population. The project is estimated to take five years and cost approximately $53 billion.
