Egypt has expressed support for the ceasefire agreement in Lebanon that came into effect on Wednesday, marking a significant step toward regional de-escalation.
In an official statement, Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that the ceasefire is a crucial phase in easing tensions, facilitated by the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701. The resolution will allow the Lebanese Army to deploy throughout southern Lebanon and assert control over the entire territory of Lebanon.
Egypt further stressed the importance of respecting Lebanon’s sovereignty, asserting that foreign interference in the country’s internal affairs must be avoided. The statement underscored the need to support Lebanon’s state institutions, including the upcoming presidential elections, free from external influence.
The Egyptian government also linked the Lebanon ceasefire to broader regional stability, calling it a precursor to a halt in Israel’s year-long military actions in Gaza. Egypt called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and highlighted the urgent need for continued humanitarian aid to the Palestinian population, in light of the severe conditions and ongoing violations in the West Bank.
Reaffirming its position on regional security, Egypt warned against further escalation, stating that military solutions alone will not resolve the conflicts. The country reiterated that a path forward requires dialogue and negotiations, anchored in international law and the principles of the United Nations.
Finally, the statement called for a comprehensive political solution, including a clear timeline for the establishment of a Palestinian state and the end of the occupation, as a critical step toward lasting peace in the region.
