Eritrea has dismissed allegations by Ethiopia’s former president, Mulatu Teshome, that Asmara is involved in conflicts across the Horn of Africa and poses a threat to stability in northern Ethiopia. Eritrea’s Ministry of Information stated that Ethiopia’s internal crises should not be blamed on external actors.
Eritrean Information Minister Yemane G. Meskel criticized Mulatu’s claims, calling them an attempt to justify a “war-mongering agenda.” He asserted that Eritrea respects international law and has no interest in interfering in Ethiopia’s domestic affairs.
The statement also revisited past tensions, blaming Ethiopia for the 1998-2000 border war and defending Eritrea’s role in the Tigray conflict, where its forces were accused of war crimes. Eritrea denied ongoing military presence in Ethiopia and dismissed accusations of involvement in the Amhara region’s unrest.
Asmara also criticized Ethiopia’s recent efforts to secure maritime access, arguing that the agreement between Ethiopia and Somaliland has heightened regional tensions. However, Eritrea did not directly address claims that it is exploiting divisions within the TPLF.
