The meeting focused on bilateral relations and regional cooperation, with Eritrean Foreign Minister conveying greetings from President isaias Afwerki of Eritrea to the Egyptian President.
President al-Sisi received the greetings warmly, emphasizing the importance of relations and cooperation between the two countries in the areas of security and development.
The meeting also reportedly addressed the situation in the Horn of Africa, in particularly the joint cooperation between Eritrea and Egypt.
In addition, the meeting also addressed maintaining security along the Red Sea coast where both countries have coastal regions, as Eritrea and Egypt continue their joint cooperation.
Eritrea has been in turmoil and conflict with its neighbour Ethiopia in recent years, with both countries accusing each other of involvement in the conflict in the Tigray region and the two factions of the TPLF group. Ethiopian various leaders accused Eritrea of supporting illegitimate groups and fueling tensions in Tigray, Ethiopia, but Eritrea has denied these accusations.
There were even fears of a war between Ethiopia and Eritrea although the Ethiopian Prime Minister stated that his country doesn’t want a conflict with Eritrea and he proposed peaceful solution for Red Sea acces . Egypt, which has a dispute with Ethiopia over the GERD dam which will Ethiopia reportedly inaugurate after 6 months, formed a tripartite alliance in Asmara in August last year, bringing together Egypt, Eritrea, and Somalia.
After the resolution of the Ethiopia-Somalia crisis on Somaliland-Ethiopia MoU by Türkiye’s mediation, the crisis subsided, and the alliance collapsed. Egypt and Eritrea are now working together to put pressure on Ethiopia, Egypt is expected to deploy its troops to Somalia a part of African Union peacekeeping mission in Somalia namely African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia “AUSSOM” Egypt and Ethiopia will participate together in the fight against Al-Shabaab in Somalia for the first time.
