Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki held discussions with African Union Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat in Asmara on January 30, 2025. Their talks centered on the challenges confronting the African Union and its future strategies.
Faki Mahamat highlighted that Africa’s development remains hindered by security threats, internal instability, and external interference. He also pointed to the financial constraints of the African Union, emphasizing that member states’ failure to meet their financial commitments weakens the organization’s independence. Additionally, he cited ongoing conflicts, terrorism, and Africa’s limited influence in global forums as significant obstacles.
Isaias underscored the necessity of addressing Africa’s issues internally, arguing that foreign interventions often serve external interests rather than Africa’s progress. He stressed that sustainable development relies on peace and stability, advocating for regional collaboration based on self-sufficiency. He also called for structural reforms within the African Union to enhance its effectiveness.
