Ethiopia has taken a significant step toward equitable healthcare with a workshop in Adama focused on integrating disability inclusion into the national health system. Held from November 25-26, the event was organized by the World Health Organization (WHO) in collaboration with the Ethiopian Ministry of Health and Humanity and Inclusion (HI).
The workshop, attended by 37 representatives from government, NGOs, and disability organizations, marked the first phase of implementing WHO’s “Health Equity for Persons with Disabilities: Guide for Action.” Discussions identified challenges persons with disabilities face in accessing healthcare and outlined strategies to address these issues.
Key outcomes included mapping organizations involved in disability and health, forming a National Technical Working Group, and planning a situational assessment to guide future action. These steps align with Ethiopia’s commitment to the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and its sustainable development goals.
The initiative aims to create a more inclusive health system that ensures equitable access for all Ethiopians, regardless of ability.
