The Ethiopian Railway Corporation (ERC) and the Korea Railroad Corporation (KORAIL) have formalized a partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aimed at improving the overall efficiency and reliability of Ethiopian rail services. During the signing ceremony, Helina Belachew, CEO of the Ethiopian Railway Corporation, highlighted that the agreement marks a significant step in deepening cooperation and laying the foundation for future collaborative agreements.
Belachew emphasized that the partnership would not only benefit the Ethiopian Railway Corporation but also contribute to broader economic growth by improving the efficiency, safety, and sustainability of the country’s railway infrastructure. She expressed confidence that the collaboration would foster regional economic development, creating positive impacts for the nation as a whole.
KORAIL’s CEO, Moon Hee-Han, reiterated his corporation’s commitment to supporting the development of Ethiopia’s railway system. Both parties established the Korea-Ethiopia Railway Working Group to streamline the sharing of information and business updates between the two countries’ railway sectors. This working group will serve as a platform for discussions and sharing the progress of joint projects, fostering continuous collaboration.
Moon also emphasized the importance of exploring further railway projects and enhancing pan-African railway cooperation through overseas development assistance, ensuring that both nations work together to improve the railway infrastructure across the continent.
