Ethio telecom, Djibouti Telecom, and Sudatel have unveiled the Horizon Fiber Initiative, a project designed to create a high-capacity fiber optic network connecting Africa to Europe, Asia, and other regions. This partnership is set to improve global connectivity with faster, more reliable communication services.
The initiative addresses vulnerabilities in submarine cables located in the Red Sea, which are prone to disruptions. By offering an alternative terrestrial fiber network, it promises improved efficiency, reduced delays, and secure communication for businesses and users.
Supporting Africa’s Digital Transformation Strategy 2030, the project seeks to close the digital gap, drive innovation, and support local economies. It is expected to enhance trade, create opportunities for industries, and position Africa as a significant player in the digital landscape.
Planned for completion by April 2025, the initiative reflects the partners’ shared commitment to advancing technology and regional collaboration, paving the way for sustainable growth in Africa’s digital sector.
