An Ethiopian delegation, led by Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos, is participating in the G-20 Foreign Ministers’ Forum, which began today in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The forum, themed “Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainability,” was inaugurated by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. In his address, Gedion highlighted the global challenges arising from geopolitical tensions, conflicts, and climate change. He emphasized the need to balance competition and cooperation while fostering international collaboration, particularly among G-20 nations, to promote global stability and prosperity.
The minister reaffirmed Ethiopia’s commitment to strengthening collective security, reforming international institutions, and ensuring inclusive global governance. He also urged greater support for the development priorities of emerging economies.
This marks the first time the G-20 Foreign Ministers’ Forum is being held in Africa, with Ethiopia attending at the invitation of South Africa, the current G-20 Chair.
Over the two-day event, discussions will focus on pressing global issues, including regional and international security, geopolitical rivalries, sustainable development, and climate action. The forum will also address key priorities set by South Africa’s G-20 presidency for 2025, such as inclusive economic growth, food security, artificial intelligence, and energy transition.
