The Tigray Interim Administration has condemned a recent call from senior Tigray forces for the dissolution and restructuring of the interim government, labeling it a “clear coup.” The administration warned that this action threatens the Pretoria Agreement and regional stability.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the administration, led by Getachew Reda, described the call as an overstep of military authority and a deviation from its original mission. The statement emphasized that any support for dismantling the interim government is unacceptable, warning that it would lead to lawlessness and instability.
The Tigray forces, in a statement released on January 23, 2025, accused the interim administration of being unduly influenced by external forces and failing to fulfill its responsibilities. They alleged that some leaders had committed treason, failed to act in the public interest, and exceeded their mandates.
This division within the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) has escalated tensions, particularly between factions led by Debretsion Gebremichael and Getachew Reda. The rift deepened following the TPLF’s 14th Congress, with Debretsion’s group removing Reda and others from key positions. Meanwhile, Reda’s administration accused Debretsion’s faction of attempting to destabilize the region.
The Interim Administration’s Cabinet announced it would hold an emergency meeting to address the “unusual” actions and ensure a thorough investigation. The administration cautioned against making rash decisions, emphasizing the high risks involved. Security forces were urged to act responsibly and reject the illegal proposal to prevent further destabilization and public suffering.
