The president of the Tigray Interim Administration, Getachew Reda, has issued an order requiring zonal and district administration units to get permission from his office in advance of holding any meetings. President Getachew stressed the value of centralized decision-making in an official letter to all zonal and district governments.
He underlined how critical it is to address the region’s pressing issues and made it strictly forbidden for anyone to meet without his prior approval.
The interim administration’s goals for the coming year were also outlined by President Getachew. These included planning for the fiscal year 2024–2025, preventing and treating cholera, maintaining territorial unity, and repatriating displaced citizens.
He emphasized that “any unapproved meetings could hinder the progress of these critical initiatives.”
He issued a warning, saying that any meetings held outside the parameters set by the acting government would not be accepted. He also gave the appropriate authorities instructions to keep an eye on and stop these kinds of unapproved gatherings.
Getachew’s order came just days after the 14th Congress, which was held in Mekelle, the capital of Tigray, over the course of seven days, resulted in the TPLF’s chairman, Debretsion Gebremichael (PhD), being re-elected.
Key executive members, including Getachew, boycotted the Congress, which resulted in a shift in the party’s leadership.Amanuel Assefa, the former leader of the Interim Administration President’s office and head of the justice bureau for the Tigray area, was named by the Congress as the party’s new deputy chairman, succeeding Getachew. Amanuel oversaw the Congress’s major secretarial duties as well.
Nonetheless, Getachew and a number of other important members of the temporary government deemed the results of the TPLF Congress to be “null and void” during a different conference that took place over the weekend.
