Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s largest aviation group and a SKYTRAX certified Four Star Global Airline, has announced a significant new partnership with the Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to establish a national carrier, Air Congo. This strategic collaboration will see the DRC government holding a 51% majority stake, while Ethiopian Airlines retains a 49% share and will manage the airline’s operations.
The new airline, Air Congo, aims to enhance air transport connectivity within the DRC and across Central Africa. It will help facilitate increased investment, trade, and tourism, contributing to the socio-economic development of the region. Ethiopian Airlines, known for its operational success and fleet of modern aircraft, will also be responsible for providing comprehensive training to Congolese nationals, including pilots, cabin crew, and technical staff.
Ethiopian Airlines’ CEO, Mesfin Tasew, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, emphasizing that the launch of Air Congo aligns with the airline’s broader Vision 2035 strategy to expand air transport infrastructure and connectivity across Africa. The initial operations of Air Congo will begin with two Boeing 737-800 aircraft, serving domestic markets and connecting seven airports in the DRC.
The partnership strengthens Ethiopian Airlines’ position as a key player in Africa’s aviation sector, continuing its mission to establish multiple hubs across the continent. This move complements the airline’s existing partnerships with ASKY Airlines in Lomé, Malawi Airlines in Lilongwe, and Zambia Airways in Lusaka. With its forward-thinking strategies and dedication to growth, Ethiopian Airlines continues to shape the future of African air travel.
