Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has reaffirmed Ethiopia’s solidarity with the people of Sudan as the country faces a worsening humanitarian crisis. Speaking at the High-Level Humanitarian Conference for the People of Sudan held in Addis Ababa on Friday, Abiy emphasized Ethiopia’s commitment to supporting its neighbor during these challenging times.
The conference, jointly organized by Ethiopia, the United Arab Emirates, the African Union and IGAD, aimed to mobilize international support to address Sudan’s crisis and press for a humanitarian ceasefire during the upcoming Ramadan period. High-level officials including Kenyan President William Ruto, UN Secretary-General António Guterres, AU Commission Chair Moussa Faki Mahamat and UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Shakhboot bin Nahyan Al Nahyan were among the participants.
Ethiopia’s Support for Sudan
Prime Minister Abiy highlighted the deep historical and cultural ties between Ethiopia and Sudan, emphasizing their shared struggles and aspirations. He noted that Ethiopia has been actively supporting Sudan’s peace and sovereignty for the past six years, including contributing to its economy by providing electricity through a dedicated transmission line.
Despite Ethiopia’s own challenges, Abiy announced that his government would provide $15 million in aid to support Sudanese people in need. He called on international donors, humanitarian organizations and the private sector to increase their contributions to address the serious resource gap affecting aid operations.
Abiy reaffirmed Ethiopia’s commitment to continue to assist Sudan, sharing its limited resources and maintaining an open-door policy for Sudanese refugees, saying, “As Ramadan approaches, urgent action is needed.”
