The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has imposed penalties on five airlines, including international and domestic operators, for breaching passenger rights under its regulatory framework.
The sanctions were issued for violations such as failure to provide refunds within the stipulated period, mishandling of baggage, failure to respond to directives, and issues related to flight delays and cancellations.
According to Michael Achimugu, NCAA’s director of public affairs and consumer protection, the Authority has observed non-compliance with its regulations, which mandate refunds within 14 days for online purchases and immediate refunds for cash transactions.
While the affected airlines were not officially named, sources indicate they include Ethiopian Airlines, Royal Maroc Airlines, Air Peace, Aero Contractors, and Arik Air. Achimugu emphasized that while some flight disruptions, particularly during the harmattan season, are due to force majeure, airlines remain accountable for avoidable breaches.
The NCAA further stated that it plans to summon airline executives to address the rising complaints of delays and regulatory violations, signaling potential additional enforcement actions if compliance is not achieved.
