Conflict Erupts in Debark as Tensions Escalate in AmharaA weekend of violence has disrupted the previously peaceful environment of Debark town in the North Gondar Zone of the Amhara region.
Eyewitnesses reported that clashes began on Saturday, October 19, 2024, and continued into the night of Sunday, October 20, 2024.
In a conversation with local Ethiopian media, a Debark resident noted that such conflicts are not uncommon in the region. “These sporadic skirmishes have been ongoing,” he remarked, although he did not provide details regarding the extent of casualties or property damage caused by the recent clashes.
Another anonymous local shared insights about ongoing confrontations between government security forces and Fano militants near Debark.
He recalled previous conflicts in September 2024, which reportedly resulted in significant civilian casualties.
On October 20, 2024, the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) announced on social media that operations conducted by the Northwest Command Corps in and around Debark had led to the “neutralization of terrorist leaders and members,” along with the confiscation of weapons.
Additionally, the BBC reported, citing local residents, that over 100 people died in alleged attacks by government forces in the South Mecha district of the North Gojjam Zone earlier in October 2024.
Victims included children, the elderly, and young adults, who lost their lives due to drone strikes and indiscriminate shootings in Gerchech town, the district’s administrative center, between October 11 and 14.
The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is currently investigating the impact on civilians and public infrastructure, particularly concerning the incident in Gerchech.
A week prior, Ethiopian Journal reported on significant armed conflict occurring for several hours on October 13, 2024, in Woldia, the capital of the North Wollo Zone, which led to restricted movement and heightened tension in the area.
Further evidence of escalating violence emerged from Minjar Shenkora district in the North Shewa Zone, where intense clashes occurred on October 7, 2024.
Residents reported heavy bombardments affecting their neighborhoods, resulting in damage to numerous homes.
The renewed conflict between government forces and Fano militia has intensified across major cities and towns in the Amhara region.
This escalation followed a joint statement issued by the ENDF and the Amhara regional government on October 1, 2024, announcing their commitment to continue what they describe as “law enforcement operations” until “lasting peace” is achieved.
During a recent press briefing, Mengesha Fentaw, head of the Amhara Communication Bureau, stated that operations would focus on “armed groups and leaders within government structures” and would be “intensified.” He emphasized the need for “decisive measures” against those orchestrating armed confrontations.
