Police have apprehended a former MP who was reportedly found with two briefcases containing suspected counterfeit dollars.
The former MP is married to a former corruption suspect who was among several individuals targeted in an all-day operation by the EACC.
The EACC is investigating claims of embezzlement of public funds amounting to Sh199 million through fraudulent claims by the National Hospital Insurance Fund for a city health facility between 2021 and 2023.
As part of the investigation, the EACC conducted searches at the residences of both the health facility directors and NHIF officials on Thursday. During the search, the former MP, upon hearing the search team at his door, reportedly cocked his Ceska pistol, according to the EACC.
The Commission reported that their team recovered several items, including a Ceska pistol with an allegedly expired firearm permit.
“In addition, we found two briefcases filled with counterfeit US dollars estimated to be in the millions, along with various chemicals in both powder and liquid forms,” the EACC stated.
“After granting access to the residence and identification by the search team, the search proceeded and uncovered several items, including a Ceska pistol with an expired firearm permit.”
The team also discovered assorted chemicals (both powder and liquid). The Commission noted that the counterfeit dollars and other items have been handed over to the OCS EACC police station to further advance the criminal case against the former MP and his wife.
“The search provided additional valuable information to aid the ongoing investigation,” the statement continued.
This included original pre-approved NHIF claim forms, patient lists, bank transaction slips, property ownership documents, and electronic gadgets.
All individuals who were searched were interviewed, and statements were recorded.
