Gabon’s interim President Brice Oligui Nguema has announced his candidacy for the country’s presidential elections, scheduled for April 12.
Nguema, who celebrated his 50th birthday on Monday, came to power in a 2023 military coup that ended the decades-long rule of former President Ali Bongo and his family. The coup was part of a wave of military coups that took place across West and Central Africa between 2020 and 2023.
While many Gabonese welcomed Bongo’s removal, concerns have been raised about the junta’s long-term intentions. But a new constitution was approved in a referendum in November, which military officials described as a step toward restoring democratic rule. Unlike some other transitional governments, the new charter does not prevent Nguema from running.
“After careful consideration and in response to your numerous appeals, I have decided to run in the presidential elections on April 12, 2025,” Nguema told supporters in heavy rain in Libreville.
“I am ready to preside over the destiny of our country,” he said, expressing confidence in his ability to lead Gabon’s future.
