Gambia Minister of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services Ismaila Ceesay emphasized the strong relationship between Türkiye and Gambia, emphasizing the importance of cultural and historical understanding between the two countries.
Ceesay described Gambia as a peaceful and stable democracy with a rich cultural heritage. He noted that the West African country is home to various ethnic groups and religions, and has a climate suitable for tourism with more than 500 species of birds.
The minister emphasized the importance of the Gambia River, describing it as the “key” to the country and a must-see for visitors. When asked to describe Gambia in one word, he replied, “Peace. Peace. Peace. Gambia is a very peaceful country.”
Expanding Cooperation with Türkiye
On bilateral relations, Ceesay reaffirmed Türkiye’s strong relations with Gambia, stressing the importance of mutual cultural awareness. He noted that Gambians should learn more about Türkiye’s traditions, history and geography, just as Turks should learn more about Gambian culture and heritage.
He suggested increasing media cooperation, including a memorandum of understanding for content exchange, capacity building and experience sharing between the two countries.
Ceesay also expressed his gratitude to the Turkish people for their support in various sectors, including defense and investment, and conveyed President Adama Barrow’s appreciation of Türkiye’s contributions. He praised the Turkish ambassador in Banjul, describing him as a humble figure whose efforts to strengthen bilateral relations are widely recognized.
Strengthening Turkey-Gambia Relations
Türkiye and The Gambia have continued to deepen diplomatic ties through political, economic, and military cooperation. Türkiye has supported Gambia’s defense sector since 1991 by providing training for Gambian soldiers, police officers and gendarmes. As a result, it is not uncommon to hear Gambians speaking Turkish on the streets of Banjul.
Educational and cultural exchanges have also grown. The Turkish Maarif Foundation operates a school in Gambia and the Yunus Emre Institute is preparing to open a Turkish Cultural Center in the country.
Trade relations are also growing, with Turkish exports to Gambia expected to increase by 16% by 2024. Gambians continue to show a keen interest in Türkiye’s culture, signaling a new phase of cooperation and mutual understanding between the two countries.
