NAWEC, a public company under the Gambian government, is seeking bids for a 50 MW solar energy panel facility to be deployed in Soma, Gambia.
This facility, which is part of a 150 MW solar energy project, has been under development since 2019. NAWEC and MoPE aim to transfer the tender to an independent power producer through a public-private partnership.
The tender document states that the independent power producer will be responsible for the financing, construction, and operation of the first phase of the solar energy park, including the battery energy storage system, for a duration of 25 years.
This project will be built on a 225-hectare site in Soma, Gambia, and will sell electricity to NAWEC.
According to a statement by the Gambian government in 2020, it is planned for the 150 MW Gambia Solar Park to be combined with a battery capacity ranging from 100 to 150 MWh. Proposals will be open until November 14.
According to IRENA (the International Renewable Energy Agency), the solar panel utilization capacity in Gambia was only 2 MW by the end of 2023. Following the commissioning of a 23 MW solar facility in March in Jambur, Gambia’s total capacity has now increased to 25 MW.
Gambia seems to be placing increasing importance on renewable energy sources day by day.
