Akua Donkor, the presidential candidate for the Ghana Freedom Party in the upcoming 2024 elections, has passed away. Her running mate, Kwabena Agyekum Kubi, popularly known as “Roman Fada,” confirmed her death during a radio broadcast on Tuesday, October 29.
The 72-year-old politician, who was also the founder of the Ghana Freedom Party, died while receiving treatment at a hospital in Accra on Monday. Kubi shared details of her illness, stating, “She had been unwell for several days, so we admitted her to Nsawam Government Hospital on Saturday. Unfortunately, her condition did not improve, and she was later transferred to Ridge Hospital. I received a call from the family yesterday afternoon informing me that she had passed away.”
The news of Donkor’s death has shocked many across the nation. Throughout her political career, she was known for her commitment to addressing the concerns of grassroots communities. Donkor had previously participated in two elections and was listed as the third candidate on the ballot for the upcoming presidential race, which is now just under six weeks away.
In her campaign for the presidency, Akua Donkor pledged to provide duty-free port services for the clearance of goods, implement free education, and ensure fair wages for farmers, among other initiatives aimed at improving the lives of Ghanaians. Following her passing, Kubi announced that the party would convene on Tuesday to discuss the next steps in light of this tragic loss.

Akua Donkor was a prominent figure in Ghanaian politics and the founder of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP). Born in February 1952 in the Afigya Kwabre District of the Ashanti Region, she was a farmer by profession and pursued her political ambitions despite lacking formal education. Donkor served as an assemblywoman for Herman and began her presidential ambitions in the 2012 elections when she attempted to run as an independent candidate but was disqualified by the electoral commission. In the 2020 elections, she expressed her focus on free education, reducing import taxes, and creating a free trade zone at Tema port to promote business growth.
