Renowned Ghanaian actor John Dumelo has achieved a significant political milestone, winning the Ayawaso West Wuogon parliamentary seat in the 2024 general elections. Running on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dumelo secured 40,561 votes, defeating incumbent Lydia Alhassan of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who received 27,377 votes.
Celebrating his victory, Dumelo shared his gratitude on Instagram, writing, “We made history with 13,000 gap. Thank you, Ayawaso West!!!!”
This victory marks a remarkable turnaround for Dumelo, who narrowly lost to Alhassan in the 2020 elections. It is also a significant achievement for the NDC, as Dumelo becomes the first party candidate to win the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency seat in 24 years.
Dumelo, a celebrated figure in Ghana’s film industry with numerous awards to his name, now embarks on a new chapter in his career as a lawmaker. His success underscores the growing influence of public figures transitioning into politics in Ghana.
