The U.S. Government has honored Dintie Tayiru Sule, Executive Director of Sustainable Aid through Voluntary Establishment (SAVE)-Ghana, with one of the prestigious 2024 Secretary of State’s Awards for Global Anti-Racism Champions (GARC). Sule stands out as the sole African recipient among six awardees from around the world, recognized for his exceptional courage, leadership, and commitment to advancing racial equity, justice, and human rights.
Prior to the award ceremony in Washington, D.C., Ambassador Palmer met with Sule to discuss the significant contributions made by SAVE-Ghana, particularly in supporting the Fulbe community, primarily comprised of cattle herders in the Upper West Region.
After accepting the award at the U.S. Department of State on October 21, Sule stated, “My drive to advocate for minority groups comes from my personal experiences, a profound sense of justice, and a wish to foster positive change. I genuinely hope my work contributes to a future where no minority group faces stigma or is deprived of their fundamental rights.”
Since 2021, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has backed Sule’s efforts through its Office for Transition Initiatives (OTI) Littorals Regional Initiative (LRI) program, which aims to promote inclusivity within local governance and the broader community in the Upper West Region. SAVE-Ghana has been instrumental in facilitating community engagement with local authorities regarding taxation issues and fostering better relations between the Fulbe and other communities.
The LRI initiative helps West African coastal states combat violent extremist organizations by addressing localized conflicts and ethno-religious marginalization, thereby enhancing social cohesion. This targeted program complements USAID’s broader strategies to prevent the spread of extremism.
SAVE-Ghana, based in Tumu, Upper West Region, is dedicated to protecting vulnerable populations and alleviating poverty through rights-based and evidence-driven approaches. The organization focuses on promoting food security, sustainable livelihoods, and safeguarding the rights of women, children, and the Fulbe minority.
