The United States and the United Nations have congratulated Ghana for the peaceful conduct of the December 7, 2024, general elections, highlighting the nation’s commitment to democracy.
US Secretary of State, Antony J. Blinken, praised President-elect John Dramani Mahama on his electoral success and extended congratulations to Vice-President-elect Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, Ghana’s first female Vice-President. The statement also acknowledged outgoing Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for his gracious acceptance of the results.
The US commended Ghana’s Electoral Commission, poll workers, civil society organizations, and security forces for ensuring a transparent and peaceful electoral process. However, the statement expressed condolences for lives lost in isolated incidents of violence, calling for investigations to ensure accountability.
“We are proud of our enduring partnership with Ghana and look forward to strengthening our historic relationship with President-elect Mahama,” the statement added.
From the UN, Leonardo Santos Simão, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for West Africa and the Sahel, also lauded Ghanaians for their responsibility and commitment during the elections. He praised Dr. Bawumia’s exemplary concession and urged all citizens to rally behind the President-elect to consolidate Ghana’s democratic achievements.
“Ghana remains an inspiration for democracy across Africa. The UN, alongside regional partners, stands ready to support Ghana’s efforts toward sustained democracy and prosperity,” Mr. Santos Simão concluded.
This international recognition reaffirms Ghana’s reputation as a beacon of democracy on the continent.
