Borussia Dortmund put on an impressive performance against Spanish giants Barcelona. Guinean striker Serhou Guirassy managed to score a hat-trick in this thrilling encounter.
However, despite the strong result, Dortmund had suffered a heavy defeat in the first leg, which ultimately led to their exit from the tournament.
Barcelona, who traveled to Germany with a 4-0 advantage from the first leg, were stunned when Guirassy scored a cheeky Panenka penalty in the 11th minute. This early goal gave Dortmund a morale boost, but they were unable to find another goal before the end of the first half.
Just four minutes into the second half, Guirassy struck again to ignite hopes of a miraculous comeback. However, only five minutes later, Ramy Bensebaini’s unfortunate own goal killed the momentum Dortmund had built. Guirassy completed his hat-trick in the 76th minute by firing in a loose ball, but it wasn’t enough to turn the tie around.
As a result, Barcelona advanced to the semi-finals of the Champions League. They will now face the winner of the Inter Milan vs Bayern Munich clash.
Guirassy, with 13 goals, finished as the top scorer of the tournament—a remarkable achievement for a striker known for his journeyman career. While Dortmund’s Champions League journey has ended, their season is far from over.
Currently sitting eighth in the Bundesliga, they still aim to qualify for next season’s Champions League. To do so, they will need to collect six more points than their rivals in the remaining matches.
