Guinea, with an impressive performance by Borussia Dortmund’s 28-year-old star Serhou Guirassy, easily defeated Ethiopia. After a series of poor performances, Guinea rose from the ashes with this victory.
Last season, Guirassy played for VfB Stuttgart and finished second in the Bundesliga top scorer chart with 28 goals and 2 assists, just behind Harry Kane, showing his quality once again in this match.
In the 18th minute, Guirassy converted a penalty to make it 1-0, and then, in the 36th minute, he doubled the score with an assist from Seydouba Cisse. However, the star striker wasn’t done yet, as he netted his third goal in the 45+2 minute, completing a hat-trick and putting Guinea 3-0 up at halftime. Guinea continued to dominate after the break, with Seydouba Cisse adding another goal in the 48th minute to make it 4-0. Ethiopia managed to get on the scoreboard in the 53rd minute through Canaan Markneh, but it wasn’t enough to mount a comeback.
Guirassy’s outstanding performance sent a strong message that Guinea won’t be an easy opponent, although this win was not enough to lift them into the top two of the group. For Ethiopia, things look bleak as they have only managed to earn 1 point halfway through the group stage.
