A heavy rainfall advisory has been issued for parts of Kenya, including the Central Rift Valley, Nairobi, and southeast lowlands, with rain expected to exceed 20mm within 24 hours starting Thursday. Kenya Meteorological Department Director David Gikungu reported that rainfall could intensify to over 30mm in areas like southeastern lowlands and central Kenya, including Nairobi, on Friday, November 15, 2024, with an anticipated reduction in rain intensity by November 16.
Affected counties include Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Nyeri, Kiambu, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Isiolo, Nakuru, Kericho, Bomet, Narok, parts of Kajiado, Nairobi, Machakos, Kitui, and Makueni. Authorities urge residents to remain cautious of potential flash floods and advise individuals in downstream areas to stay alert to the risk of sudden water flow from upstream areas.
The department advises against traversing through moving water, being in open spaces, or seeking shelter under trees or near metal structures during storms. People in landslide-prone zones, particularly around the Aberdare slopes, Mt. Kenya, and other hilly regions, are also urged to stay vigilant.
Further updates may be issued if changes in weather conditions occur. This advisory marks the year’s first significant heavy rainfall warning.
