Risk of Natural Disasters for 400,000 People in Amhara Region During Rainy Season
According to the Amhara Disaster Prevention and Food Security Commission, up to 400,000 people in eight zones and 34 districts across the region may be at risk of natural disasters during this year’s rainy season. Commissioner Tesfaw Batable reported that districts including North Gondar, South Gondar, and Wag Hemra zones have experienced landslides and flooding due to severe rainfall.
A recent landslide in the Tselemti region of the North Western Tigray zone resulted in ten deaths and displaced 2,949 people. Tesfaw noted that the Amhara regional government has allocated 45,000 quintals of supplies for emergency assistance in the Tselemti district, where authorities are providing daily food aid to affected individuals.
The National Meteorological Agency has forecasted significant rainfall in the region until September 10th. Tesfaw highlighted that the Commission has implemented preventive measures, such as constructing flood prevention dams in 21 districts at a cost of 94.7 million birr. However, he warned that despite these efforts, 28,000 people may still face displacement.
To support the affected communities, the government is collaborating with both governmental and non-governmental organizations. Tesfaw advised individuals in vulnerable areas, particularly around Lake Tana, to relocate to safer locations.
