The South African national cricket team continued their progress in the Test Championship by defeating Bangladesh in three days.
This Test victory also set a record. South Africa won the second Test in Chattogram by an innings and 273 runs. With this score, they extended their previous record of a 254-run margin, also against Bangladesh, set in 2017.
The home team started their first innings at 38-4 and quickly fell to 48-8. However, a partnership of 103 runs between Mominul Haque and Taijul Islam helped the team reach 159. South Africa responded by bowling the opponents out for just 143 runs in 43.4 overs, securing the victory.
Left-arm spinners Keshav Maharaj and Senuran Muthusamy took 5-59 and 4-45, respectively, ensuring that South Africa won the series 2-0.
Following this victory, the South African national team rose to fourth place in the standings. If they secure wins in four matches against Sri Lanka and Pakistan, it looks like it will be enough to qualify for the final.
Captain Aiden Markram made the following statement after the match:
“I am incredibly proud – that was special. Qualifying for the World Test Championship final is a long way away, but to be in the mix for the finals is what’s driving us.”
