Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto is scheduled to visit Egypt this Tuesday to participate in key meetings of the D-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation. Established in 1997, the D-8 is a bloc comprising eight influential Muslim-majority developing nations: Indonesia, Egypt, Bangladesh, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Turkey. The organization aims to enhance economic cooperation and foster deeper collaboration across regions spanning Southeast Asia, South Asia, and Africa.
During his visit, President Prabowo will attend the D-8 summit on Thursday, where he will formally assume the group’s chairmanship. The term, set to begin on January 1, 2026, will see Indonesia leading the organization for a one-year period. The D-8 has long served as a platform for advancing mutual economic interests among its members, and Prabowo’s leadership will be expected to further these objectives in the coming years.
Since taking office in October, Prabowo has reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment to its long-standing foreign policy of non-alignment. His administration seeks to maintain a neutral stance in global geopolitics while deepening Indonesia’s ties with both traditional and emerging powers.
In his short time as president, Prabowo has already undertaken extensive diplomatic travels, visiting over 20 countries, including China, the United States, Japan, and Russia. These visits reflect his administration’s ambition to broaden Indonesia’s international influence, while preserving its independent foreign policy.
