Buganda’s Katikkiro, Charles Peter Mayiga, has dismissed claims suggesting that Kabaka Mutebi’s return was prompted by a denial of a visa extension in Namibia. Mayiga clarified that Kabaka’s return was always scheduled for July 21, aligning with the end of a three-month medical leave recommended by his doctors.
The Kabaka arrived in Uganda on Monday morning, ending months of speculation about his health and stay in Namibia. He landed at Entebbe International Airport shortly after midnight, where he was welcomed by Katikkiro Mayiga, Nnabagereka Sylvia Nagginda, and other members of the royal family, including Nnaalinnya Lubuga Agnes Nabaloga, Prince Jjunju Kiweewa, and Nnaalinnya Victoria Nkinzi.
Responding to speculation
News of the Kabaka’s return quickly circulated, amplified by social media rumors regarding a visa issue. Mayiga clarified these rumors, explaining that Namibia offers visa-free entry to Ugandans, thus refuting the claims about a visa extension.
The Buganda Kingdom has officially apologized to the Namibian government for any privacy breaches by individuals during the Kabaka’s medical treatment in Namibia.
Though the Kabaka’s return aligns with preparations for his coronation anniversary, Mayiga mentioned that whether he will attend depends on medical advice. The coronation plans are expected to proceed as scheduled.
Kabaka Mutebi, 69, has been receiving medical care overseas, mainly in Germany, with his recent stay in Namibia for specialized treatment.
