A timeline has been published by the Kenyan-led mediation effort aimed at bringing peace to South Sudan. It is anticipated that parties and stakeholders would sign the Tumaini accord in Nairobi on September 16.
The schedule, which Reuters was allowed to view, lists the steps that will take place before the signing. From September 1st to 8th, President Salva Kiir and President William Ruto of Kenya will be in attendance at the China-Africa forum. They will take use of this chance to introduce regional leaders to the Tumaini program.
On September 6, a group representing the parties and interested parties will visit Juba as part of a mission to foster confidence. The implementation matrix and all nine protocols are to be initialed on September 9 and 10.
Prioritize the Tumaini Initiative
The Tumaini Initiative has been given top priority by South Sudan’s transitional administration as the key strategy for resolving the nation’s fundamental problems and overcoming its present obstacles. In order to ensure a seamless transition after the prolonged transitional period, the initiative seeks to provide leadership and a coherent policy direction for important issues including elections and the permanent constitution.
In order to support an inclusive peace process, President Kiir and First Vice President Riek Machar have both stated their commitment to the Tumaini Initiative and to addressing divisions within their respective constituent parties.
Strengthening confidence and trust
The significance of opposition groups joining the Tumaini Initiative has been underscored by stakeholders. The transitional government has promised to release political prisoners, remove limitations on freedom of movement, and examine the National Security Service Act to make sure it complies with the constitution in order to foster confidence and trust.
Additionally, the government has given mediators its word that it will implement changes centered on accountability, transparency, and public financial management in order to solve the worsening economic conditions.
Kenyan civic society expresses endorsement
Kenyan civil society organizations demonstrated their solidarity with the Tumaini Initiative on September 2nd by holding a press conference in Nairobi. They pleaded with President Ruto to keep up his support and asked South Sudanese leaders to commit to the process.
The ceremony was widely covered by the media in South Sudan and Kenya, underscoring the significance of the peace effort.
In order to guarantee correct information and avoid misrepresentation, the parties participating in the Tumaini Initiative seek to update the public on a frequent and transparent basis.
