Kenya has launched Africa’s first hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) battery laboratory in Nairobi, providing vital services for the country’s growing eco-friendly vehicle market.
The facility, established by Japan’s Vehicle Service Centre (JVSC) in partnership with Cars Kenya Ltd, will offer battery testing, analysis, and reconditioning to support hybrid vehicle owners. Many imported hybrid cars arrive in Kenya with only a few years of battery life remaining, making local maintenance services crucial for vehicle longevity.
Cars Kenya Ltd Managing Director, Sam Wanjema, emphasized the increasing popularity of hybrid vehicles, noting that nearly 50 percent of cars on Japanese roads are hybrids. “The hybrid era brings significant environmental benefits through reduced emissions,” he said.
Japanese automotive expert Hitoshi Kitamura described the launch as a major milestone for Kenya’s automotive sector, signaling the country’s readiness to support the expanding hybrid market.
Kenya’s electric vehicle (EV) sector is also growing, with approximately 350 registered EVs. Between February and June 2023, the number of EVs increased by 729 units. Investments in infrastructure, such as solar-powered charging stations, are further driving adoption by reducing operational costs.
As hybrid and electric vehicles gain traction, Kenya is positioning itself as a leader in green mobility within Africa. The Global Electric Vehicle Outlook 2024 highlights the country’s progress in embracing sustainable transportation solutions.
