The Ministry of Health (MoH) has announced a heightened alert following the outbreak of Marburg Virus Disease (MVD) in Rwanda.
Although no cases have been identified in Kenya, authorities are taking preventive measures due to the frequent travel between the two nations.
Marburg virus is an extremely contagious and lethal disease, with a mortality rate as high as 88%.
The virus manifests through symptoms such as high fever, intense headaches, weakness, and bleeding from various parts of the body.
In an official statement, the Ministry confirmed that surveillance efforts have been intensified at all border entry points across the country.
Citizens are urged to stay vigilant and take precautionary steps.
The public has been advised to avoid close contact with individuals suspected of infection, seek medical assistance immediately if they experience Marburg-like symptoms, and refrain from sharing personal items like towels, utensils, or clothing.
The Ministry also emphasized the importance of wearing protective gear when caring for anyone showing signs of MVD.
Additionally, frequent handwashing with soap and water, or using hand sanitiser, is strongly recommended.
People are advised to exercise caution when visiting regions affected by the outbreak.
Travellers should regularly check health advisories for their destinations and stay informed about the latest updates.
The public is encouraged to report any signs of unusual fever, bleeding, or other concerning symptoms, particularly if they have recently visited areas experiencing Marburg Virus Disease outbreak
