Kenyan MP George Koimburi has been charged with forging academic certificates, according to the public prosecutor.
Koimburi, who represents the Juja constituency near Nairobi, appeared in court on Wednesday to face three charges of forging educational documents and three charges of providing false identification documents. He denied the charges and was granted cash bail.
Prosecutors allege Koimburi falsified his high school certificate and two university course attendance certificates from an institution in his constituency.
Kenyan law requires parliamentary candidates to have completed high school. While allegations of forging academic credentials are common among lawmakers, successful prosecutions are rare.
