On Saturday, April 12, Botswana’s star athlete Letsile Tebogo claimed victory in the 200m race at the FNB Golden Prix held at Gaborone Stadium.
He completed the race in just 20.23 seconds. Having missed the 2024 edition of the same event, the Botswanan sprinter delighted his supporters with this triumphant return. After the race, he stated:
“This is our catch-up season, but I’m on the podium now. The goal was to finish first and perform well, just like we did in the 2023 championships.”
With this win, Tebogo once again demonstrated that his country is ready for the global sporting stage.
“I believe Botswana is ready for the World Championships,” said Tebogo. “With the support of the government and incredible people here, we’re prepared for 2025.”

However, the standout performance of the day came from Egypt’s Basant Hemida. She finished the 400m in 50.77 seconds, setting a new record.
After the race, Hemida said:
“I’m thrilled. This isn’t my usual event, but I’m happy to win the 400m after a long break and a very competitive race.”
In the men’s 100m, South Africa’s Akani Simbine emerged victorious. He shared the story behind his success:
