Liberia has confirmed its first Mpox case since the global outbreak was declared, as reported by Dr. Dougbeh Nyan, Director General of the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL). Dr. Nyan revealed that out of eight suspected cases tested in Sinoe County, one sample tested positive for Mpox.
“One of the eight samples returned positive,” Dr. Nyan stated. “The individuals with suspected cases are now in isolation.”
The confirmed case involves a 7-year-old girl from Sinoe who has not recently traveled. She is receiving treatment and being closely monitored. Dr. Nyan emphasized the importance of public vigilance to curb further spread.
By August 17, 2024, NPHIL had reported five Mpox cases in Liberia. A sixth case was later confirmed, but all six cases have been treated and released.
Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, has been declared a Public Health Emergency of Continental Security (PHECS) by the WHO and Africa CDC due to its spread across West, East, and South Africa, with severe outbreaks noted in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Caused by the Monkeypox virus, which is related to smallpox, Mpox spreads through direct contact with infected skin, bodily fluids, lesions, or respiratory droplets. Common symptoms include fever, chills, headaches, swollen lymph nodes, and muscle aches.
Dr. Nyan also highlighted that the eight suspected cases were identified through contact tracing. “The tracing process has revealed individuals who came into contact with these eight cases. One individual might be the original case or patient zero, and their family is providing care as they exhibit all the symptoms.”
He noted challenges in obtaining testing kits, gloves, and ambulances. “We are working to acquire additional diagnostic supplies through the WHO and Africa CDC.”
To manage the outbreak, NPHIL has set up an Incidence Management System that will focus on monitoring border areas, particularly between Liberia and La Côte d’Ivoire.
As the situation develops, health authorities are urging the public to remain alert and adhere to preventive measures to minimize the risk of further spread. The ongoing response efforts aim to contain the outbreak effectively and safeguard public health.
