The Liberian government has launched a tender seeking consultancy services to develop the framework for its first solar and battery energy storage auction. The initiative aims to establish the legal, technical, commercial, and financial mechanisms necessary for the project, with interested advisers required to submit expressions of interest by February 25, 2025.
The auction plans to procure up to 70 MW of solar power and 20 MW/60 MWh of battery energy storage across two sites. Selected independent power producers will be responsible for financing, constructing, and operating the facilities. The project falls under the Liberia Electricity Sector Strengthening and Access Project and will receive funding from a World Bank grant.
This development follows the construction of Liberia’s first utility-scale solar plant, a 20 MW facility adjacent to an existing 88 MW hydropower station, which began in October 2024 and is expected to be completed later this year.
