Libyan military commander Khalifa Haftar held a significant meeting on Sunday with Major General Hassan Rashad, the head of Egypt’s intelligence agency, in Benghazi. The discussion focused on the evolving situation in Libya and the broader regional dynamics. The talks underscored the longstanding historical and strategic ties between Egypt and Libya, particularly in the context of the ongoing political and security challenges facing the country.
During the meeting, Rashad delivered a message of solidarity from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, expressing appreciation for Haftar’s leadership. He reiterated Egypt’s commitment to supporting Libya’s stability and efforts toward resolving the Libyan crisis. In return, Haftar conveyed his deep respect for President al-Sisi, commending Egypt’s critical role in fostering peace and security within the region.
The two leaders also discussed the latest developments on both the local and regional fronts, with an emphasis on advancing the political process in Libya. Both sides agreed on the importance of supporting initiatives aimed at achieving lasting security and stability in the country, as well as contributing to regional peace.
Since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, Libya has remained deeply divided, with the internationally recognized Government of National Accord (GNA) based in Tripoli and Haftar’s forces controlling much of the east, particularly Benghazi. Despite international efforts, the country’s future remains uncertain, with both sides vying for influence over the country’s political and military direction.
