Libyan Army Chief of General Staff, General Mohamed Al-Haddad, reaffirmed his commitment to efforts aimed at unifying the country’s military institutions during a meeting on Wednesday with U.S. Africa Command’s (AFRICOM) Deputy Commander, Lieutenant General John Brennan. Al-Haddad emphasized the importance of military unification for securing a prosperous future and ensuring regional stability.
The discussions, which took place in Tripoli, centered on implementing joint training programs designed to enhance the capabilities of Libyan military personnel. The aim is to improve security and stability throughout the country. AFRICOM officials, including Lieutenant General Brennan and U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Jeremy Berndt, also met with Libyan Deputy Minister of Defense Abdul Salam Zubi and the Director of Military Intelligence. They discussed ways to enhance security cooperation between the U.S. and Libya and support efforts to unify Libya’s military and security institutions.
The meeting highlighted the critical importance of U.S.-Libya collaboration in addressing shared security challenges, with a focus on supporting Libyan-led initiatives that promote sovereignty, stability, and the development of security institutions at both local and regional levels.
On the same day, Saddam Haftar, Chief of Staff of the Ground Forces of Khalifa Haftar’s Libyan National Army, also met with Brennan to discuss expanding security cooperation and supporting efforts to reunify Libya’s military and security structures.
These talks follow a meeting between Brennan and Khalifa Haftar on Tuesday, in which Haftar stressed the pivotal role of the U.S. in resolving the Libyan crisis.
Earlier in the week, British Deputy Chief of Staff for Strategic Affairs and Military Operations, Air Marshal Harvey Smyth, visited Tripoli and Benghazi to discuss long-term military cooperation and security efforts aimed at achieving stability in Libya.
