This week, the Port of Lobito in Angola witnessed a significant milestone as it shipped its first batch of copper to the United States, transported aboard the MSC SAMU container vessel.
This development marks a new chapter in the Lobito Atlantic Railway’s operations, following its takeover of the concession in January and several successful shipments to European and Far Eastern destinations.
The copper cathodes, destined for Baltimore, arrived in Lobito on August 19, having been transported from Kolwezi via a Lobito Atlantic Railway train. The journey was completed in just six days, showcasing the efficiency of the newly established western route.
This route promises to streamline the transport of minerals and metals from the Congolese Copperbelt to international markets.
Francisco Franca, Chairman of the Lobito Atlantic Railway, highlighted the importance of this achievement, stating, “The successful export of this shipment illustrates the increasing involvement of international shipping companies with the Port of Lobito. This support is crucial for the growth of our operations and the reliable delivery of raw materials to both Europe and the United States.”
