A part of the Champions League knockout matches took place last night.
Ademola Lookman, who was recently named Africa’s best player and had just recovered from an injury, played in the second half for Atalanta.
The Super Eagles forward had missed the first leg, where his team suffered a 2-1 defeat after conceding a last-minute penalty. This time, Atalanta hosted Club Brugge at home for the return leg.
Lookman was not on the pitch in the first half, while his international teammate Raphael Onyedika started for the Belgian side, just as he had in the first leg. Atalanta was expected to start strongly, but Chemsdine Talbi struck early, scoring the opening goal for Brugge in the third minute.
In the 24th minute, Talbi found the net again, extending Brugge’s lead to 2-0. Just before halftime, Ferran Jutgla made it 3-0, putting the visitors in full control of the match.
Despite just returning from injury, Lookman was subbed on at halftime. He made an immediate impact, scoring within the first minute of the second half to bring the score to 3-1.
In the 58th minute, Lookman once again found the net, but this time his goal was disallowed for offside. Just two minutes later, Atalanta won a penalty, presenting another chance to close the gap. Lookman stepped up to take it, but Simon Mignolet made a crucial save, denying him.
After the missed penalty, Atalanta’s momentum dropped. Lookman and his teammates continued to create chances, firing 30 shots, 11 of which were on target. However, Mignolet remained solid in goal, preventing any further damage.
The match ended 3-1, securing Club Brugge’s place in the next round.
