French President Emmanuel Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron concluded a significant three-day state visit to Morocco on October 30, 2024, after a series of high-level discussions and agreements aimed at enhancing cooperation between the two nations.
At the invitation of King Mohammed VI, Macron’s visit focused on expanding collaboration in various sectors, including sustainable agriculture and water management, with an emphasis on promoting regional stability and economic development.
One of the key highlights occurred at the Royal Palace in Rabat on October 28, where Macron and King Mohammed VI signed 22 agreements valued at €10 billion. These agreements cover diverse areas such as food security, energy, and railway infrastructure, underscoring a commitment to strengthening bilateral relations in the years ahead.
In a notable address to both houses of the Moroccan parliament on October 29, Macron reaffirmed France’s support for Morocco’s territorial integrity, particularly regarding its southern provinces in Western Sahara. He emphasized that the “future” of the region relies on its full integration within Morocco and reiterated the importance of the 2007 Autonomy Plan as a foundation for a just and lasting political resolution.
“This is the position that France will implement to support Morocco in international forums,” Macron stated, clarifying that this stance is “not hostile to anyone.”
France also demonstrated its commitment by updating all government-affiliated websites to reflect an undivided map of Morocco, including its southern provinces, a move welcomed by Moroccan officials. Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita remarked that this marks “a new phase and chapter” in the two countries’ meaningful relationship, strengthened by recent discussions.
Additionally, Macron participated in a food security event organized by the OCP Group, where he praised Morocco’s comprehensive approach to water management and suggested that France could take inspiration from the North African country’s strategies.
The visit concluded with a clear message of solidarity and mutual support, paving the way for enhanced French-Moroccan collaboration in the future.
