Mali’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed concern over Algeria’s ongoing involvement in its internal affairs, following comments made by Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf regarding Mali’s national security approach. In a statement released on Wednesday, the ministry emphasized that national security is a matter of sovereignty and decisions on such issues are within the jurisdiction of Mali and the Confederation of Sahel States.
Mali’s government rejected Algeria’s comments, stating that it does not seek nor accept external advice on security matters. The statement pointed out that Algeria has historically managed its own security issues independently. Attaf had suggested that Mali’s military strategy had not been effective and proposed a political resolution to the security challenges facing the country. Mali, however, defended its approach and rejected the criticism.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also referenced a letter sent by Mali’s Transitional Government to the United Nations in January 2024, where it raised concerns about Algeria’s relationship with groups destabilizing Mali. The letter accused Algeria of offering support to these groups, which, according to Mali, has contributed to insecurity in both Mali and the wider Sahel region.
Mali highlighted the progress made by its Armed and Security Forces in addressing these security challenges, particularly against groups allegedly supported by Algeria. The ministry suggested that some Algerian officials may be reluctant to accept Mali’s achievements, accusing them of holding onto outdated views. The statement described Algeria’s continued involvement in Mali’s affairs as “paternalistic” and “disrespectful.”
Mali called on Algeria to focus on addressing its own internal issues, including the situation in the Kabyle region, rather than continuing to engage in Mali’s domestic matters. The Malian government urged Algeria to reconsider its approach and direct its efforts toward resolving its internal challenges.
This statement is part of an ongoing exchange between the two countries, with Mali frequently accusing Algeria of interfering in its internal affairs and providing support to separatist and insurgent groups in northern Mali. During the 79th UN General Assembly in September, a spokesperson for Mali once again raised concerns about Algeria’s role, criticizing its actions for contributing to tensions between the two nations.
