Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani has announced preparations for a national political dialogue aimed at fostering inclusivity and addressing pressing political issues. Speaking on Thursday during celebrations for the 64th anniversary of Mauritania’s independence, Ghazouani revealed that the government would engage with various political parties in consultations over the coming months.
Describing the initiative as “inclusive, frank, and responsible,” the president called for dialogue free from partisan disputes or personal interests, emphasizing the need to prioritize the public good. Ghazouani also stressed the importance of learning from past experiences and implementing innovative mechanisms to ensure the dialogue’s success.
The president highlighted the importance of strengthening democratic institutions, including reforms to the judiciary and legal systems, and reaffirmed his commitment to building a state rooted in law and governance.
The announcement follows the July presidential elections, where Ghazouani secured a second term amid allegations of electoral irregularities by opposition groups. Protests led by supporters of opposition candidate Biram Dah Abeid resulted in three fatalities before calm was restored. The opposition has since demanded political reforms and greater electoral transparency.
This initiative is seen as a significant step toward addressing these concerns and fostering political stability in the North African nation.
