Mauritius has temporarily closed Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (SSRIA) as Tropical Storm Garance intensifies. The Mauritius Meteorological Services issued a Category 3 cyclone warning, prompting swift action from authorities.
Airports of Mauritius (AML), the airport’s operator, announced that SSRIA would close from 7:10 p.m. (local time) on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, until further notice. The closure aims to ensure the safety of passengers and the public as the island braces for severe weather.
“Following the issuance of a Cyclone Warning Class 3 by the Mauritius Meteorological Services, Airports of Mauritius Co. Ltd. (AML) informs intending passengers and the general public that SSR International Airport (SSRIA) will close temporarily… until further notice,” AML said in a statement.
On Wednesday, Tropical Storm Garance was about 440 kilometres northwest of Mauritius. The Mauritius Weather Service reported that the storm was gaining strength rapidly. Strong winds of up to 70 kilometres per hour are expected early Thursday, along with dangerous sea conditions. Authorities have advised residents to avoid the coast and stay indoors.
The storm has already disrupted travel plans. Several airlines have adjusted their flight schedules for Wednesday and Thursday. AML urged passengers to check with their airlines for updates before heading to the airport.
“Intending passengers are advised to contact their respective airlines for further information on the status of their flights and not to proceed to the airport unless receiving confirmation of the revised departure time,” AML warned.
Emergency services are on high alert. Local authorities have activated contingency plans to handle potential disruptions. The focus remains on keeping the public safe as the cyclone approaches.
