Mogadishu Welcomes Türkiye’s Seismic Survey Vessel Arrival
Türkiye and Somalia have initiated a major energy exploration project off Somalia’s coast, marking a new era of cooperation aimed at bolstering Somalia’s oil and natural gas potential. Türkiye, leveraging its experience in the energy industry, aims to support Somalia in developing its resources, while also building local expertise and infrastructure within the Somali energy sector.
This collaboration stems from a March agreement between Türkiye’s Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources and Somalia’s Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources. The partnership underscores Türkiye’s commitment to East Africa and involves deploying a Turkish seismic vessel to Somali coastal waters to conduct a comprehensive multi-month survey. Equipped with advanced 3D seismic technology, the vessel will gather extensive data on seabed formations across designated zones, focusing on identifying potential reserves for future extraction.
The mission also aligns with Somalia’s broader vision of cultivating a sustainable and resilient energy industry, with careful consideration of environmental and marine ecosystem impacts. Somalia’s Petroleum Minister, Abdirashid Mohamed Ahmed, expressed optimism about the project, emphasizing its potential to drive economic growth, create jobs, and advance the nation’s goal of achieving energy independence.
Both Türkiye and Somalia view this venture as a transformative step in Somalia’s energy landscape, paving the way for economic resilience, strategic development, and a fortified energy future.
