Morocco has unveiled a $9 billion plan to upgrade its railway infrastructure, aiming to expand the network and improve transport accessibility nationwide. The initiative will add 1,280 kilometers of high-speed railway lines by 2040, significantly extending the current 320-kilometer network.
The project includes extending regional routes to better connect major cities like Casablanca, Rabat, and Marrakesh. The number of cities served by rail will more than double, increasing from 21 to 43, with 87% of the population set to benefit from modern railway services.
Boosting Connectivity and Economic Growth
This ambitious program is expected to create jobs, attract foreign investment, and strengthen Morocco’s position as a key regional logistics hub. A 375-kilometer line between Kenitra and Marrakesh will reduce travel times and enhance freight and logistics efficiency.
In December 2024, Morocco signed a $232 million contract with China Gezhouba Group to construct nine sections of the route. Modern train acquisitions are also planned, promising improved passenger comfort, safety, and reduced carbon emissions.
By integrating its rail network with international transport corridors, Morocco aims to boost trade volumes and global connectivity. This investment underscores the country’s commitment to sustainable development and economic expansion, positioning it as a leading player in logistics and transportation.
