Mass protests erupted across Morocco on Friday, with more than 100 demonstrations taking place to denounce Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip and express solidarity with the Palestinian people. The Support for Ummah Issues Foundation, a prominent Moroccan civil society organization, reported that 106 protests were organized in 50 cities nationwide, highlighting widespread public outrage over the ongoing conflict.
Protesters chanted slogans in support of Palestinian resistance, condemning the violence perpetrated by Israel not only in Gaza but also in the West Bank and throughout all of Palestine. They called attention to what they perceive as complicity from the U.S. and Western nations in supporting Israeli actions, as well as the troubling silence from many Arab countries regarding the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza. Furthermore, demonstrators expressed their anger over Israeli assaults on civilians in other conflict zones, including Lebanon, Yemen, Syria, and Iraq.
The protests are part of a broader movement that has seen daily demonstrations in various cities, including the capital, Rabat. Protesters have been vocal in their demands for an immediate cessation of hostilities, the lifting of the blockade on Gaza, and the urgent delivery of humanitarian aid to those affected by the violence.
Since the onset of hostilities on October 7, 2023, Israeli military actions have reportedly resulted in the deaths of at least 41,272 Palestinians in Gaza, a staggering figure that includes 16,795 children and 11,378 women. The ongoing violence has left over 95,551 individuals injured, with many still trapped under rubble as Israeli strikes continue to target critical civilian infrastructure, including hospitals, schools, and homes.
In addition to the devastation in Gaza, the situation in the West Bank and East Jerusalem has also been dire. Since October 7, Israeli forces and settlers have killed 716 Palestinians, further fueling anger and resentment among Moroccan protesters who are calling for justice and accountability.
These demonstrations reflect a growing solidarity movement within Morocco and beyond, as citizens demand an end to the violence and a renewed focus on humanitarian support for the Palestinian people. The protests not only underscore local grievances but also connect with broader themes of resistance against perceived injustices in the region.
